Perfil

Profesor asociado del Departamento de Biología de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Exactas de la Universidad del Valle.

Entre 1995-2002 realizó su pregrado en Biología con mención en genética cuyo tema de investigación fue un análisis filogenético y variabilidad molecular del virus linfotrópico humano tipo 1 (HTLV-1) en el sur occidente de Colombia.

Entre 2002-2003, joven investigador Colciencias. Tema de investigación cálculo del reloj molecular del gen TAX y la 3´LTR del HTLV-1.

Entre 2003-2008, realizo su doctorado, mediante una beca Monbukagakusho (MEXT) del gobierno japonés en la Universidad de Kagoshima, cuyo tema de investigación fue el análisis epidemiológico y molecular del Virus del Papiloma Humano VPH en canceres del tracto aero-digestivo superior.

En 2006, fue investigador invitado del grupo de infecciones y biología del cáncer del centro de investigación sobre el cáncer de la organización mundial de la salud (IARC_OMS), en la ciudad de Lyon, Francia.

Entre 2008-2009, realizo estudios postdoctorales en el departamento de epidemiologia y medicina preventiva y en el laboratorio del centro de enfermedades virales crónicas en terapia antiviral mediante el uso de técnicas de ARN de interferencia y transcriptómica en cultivos celulares inmortalizados en la Universidad de Kagoshima, Japón.

En el 2013, fue investigador invitado del grupo de Meta-genómica del instituto FISABIO de Salud Pública de la Comunidad de Valencia, España.

Professional Profile

Prof. Doc. Andres Castillo is Associate professor of the Biology department at Universidad del Valle, Cali.

Between 1995-2002 Professor Castillo completed his undergraduate degree in Biology with a mention in genetics whose research topic was a phylogenetic analysis and molecular variability of the human lympho-trophic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) in the South western of Colombia.

Under the “Joven Investigador Colciencias” program, Prof. Castillo carried out a research in the calculation of the molecular clock of the TAX and 3’ LTR of HTLV-1 gene during 2002 and 2003

Prof. Castillo obtained his Medical Sciences PhD in 2008 at Kagoshima University (Japan) through the scholarship Monbukagakusho (MEXT), where he conducted research on epidemiological and molecular analysis of the Human Papillomavirus HPV in cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract.

In 2006, Prof. Castillo was a visiting researcher in the group of Infections and Cancer Biology of the Cancer Research Center of the World Health Organization (IARC_OMS) in Lyon, France.

Between 2008-2009, he carried out postdoctoral studies on antiviral therapy by using RNA interference and transcriptomic techniques in immortalized cell cultures in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and the laboratory of the center for Chronic Viral Diseases at the University of Kagoshima, Japan.

In 2013, he was invited researcher of the meta-genomics group of the Valencian Community Centre for Public Health Research (FISABIO-Public Health, Spain)

Teaching and Research Interests

The professor Castillo coordinates the course in Applied Genomics for the Graduate in Sciences-Biology Program; as well as the elective courses of Ecology and Evolution of Pathogen Microorganisms, Molecular Microbiology, and Bioinformatics for the undergraduate program of Biology of the Universidad del Valle.

In addition, he is coordinator of the Diploma of Omics Sciences of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Universidad del Valle.
