Profesor Asociado del Departamento de Biología de la Universidad del Valle (PhD en Biología Molecular). Director del Grupo de investigación “Estudios Ecogenéticos y de Biología Molecular” avalado por COLCIENCIAS en categoría A. El Dr. Toro desarrolló sus estudios de Maestría y Doctorado en el Instituto de Biología Molecular de la Universidad Libre de Bruselas (VUB), donde trabajó en la expresión y regulación de genes en plantas. Entre los años 1996 y 1997, fue investigador asociado del programa Nacional de Biotecnología agrícola en Corpoica, Tibaitatá, Colombia. Desde el año 1998 se encuentra vinculado al Departamento de Biología de la Universidad del Valle, participando como docente en cursos de pregrado y posgrado y realizando proyectos de investigación en las áreas de la genética y la biología molecular.

Intereses de Docencia
El profesor Toro, tiene sus líneas de investigación en Biología Molecular aplicada al mejoramiento genético en plantas, así como Biotecnología aplicada a la biología de la conservación. Además, está interesado en estudios de variabilidad genética de especies silvestres tropicales mediante el uso de marcadores moleculares y estudios de diferenciación molecular intraespecífica en diferentes áreas geográficas de especies tropicales, así como la ecogenética, y los efectos del calentamiento global en la variación genética de los ecosistemas y especies tropicales.

Professional Profile
Prof. Doc. Nelson Toro is associate professor of the Biology Department at Universidad del Valle.
After studying biology in Universidad del Valle at Cali, he graduated in 1986. Dr. Toro developed his Master's and Doctorate studies at the Institute for Molecular Biology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Belgium), where he worked on the expression and regulation of genes in plants. Between 1996 and 1997, he was an associate researcher of the National Agricultural Biotechnology program at Corpoica, Tibaitatá, Colombia. Since 1998, Doc. Toro has participated as Undergraduate and Graduate professor as well as well as a researcher in genetics and molecular biology at the Biology Department of the Universidad del Valle. Professor Toro is currently the research group leader “Eco-genetics and Molecular Biology Studies” endorsed by the Colombian Science minister (A category).

Teaching Interests
Professor Toro has his lines of research in Molecular Biology applied to genetic improvement in plants, as well as using Biotechnology to conservation biology. In addition, he is interested in studies of genetic variability of tropical wild species through the use of molecular markers, and studies of intraspecific molecular differentiation of tropical species in different geographic areas, as well as ecogenetics, and the effects of global warming on the genetic variation of tropical ecosystems and species.
