Biólogo de la Universidad del Valle, con doctorado de tercer ciclo y doctorado de estado en Oceanología. en la Universite D'Aix-Marseille II (Hoy Université de la Mediterranée, Marsella, Francia) y un Postdoctorado del Centre d´Oceanologie de Marseille y de la Station Marine d´Endoume. Profesor titular de la Universidad del Valle con ingreso en septiembre de 1978. Profesor Emérito de la Universidad desde 1991. Miembro fundador de la sección de Biología Marina de esta Universidad, donde ha venido realizando investigación en ciencias del Mar en los grupos taxonómicos moluscos y equinodermos y en ecología de estuarios, manglares, arrecifes de coral y costas rocosas. Director del grupo de Investigación Ecología de Estuarios y Manglares (ECOMANGLARES). Ha dirigido cerca de 25 proyectos de investigación. Cuenta con 89 publicaciones internacionales y 93 nacionales. Ha publicado 12 libros completos y varios capítulos de libros a nivel nacional e internacional. Ha sido jefe del departamento de Biología y Decano de la facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Exactas y vicerrector de investigaciones de la Universidad del Valle. Ha dirigido 12 tesis de doctorado en biología o ciencias del mar, 15 tesis de maestría en Biología y más de 60 trabajos de grado de pregrado en biología. Entre el año 2000 y el 2004, fue el coordinador de un proyecto binacional (Argentina-Uruguay) para la conservación y recuperación del estuario Rio de la Plata.

Professional Profile
Prof. Doc. Jaime Cantera is a Biologist from the Universidad del Valle, with a third cycle doctorate and a state doctorate in Oceanology at the Universite D'Aix-Marseille II (currently, Université de la Mediterranée, Marseille, France). Also, he post-doctorate at Centre d´Oceanologie de Marseille, and la Station Marine d´Endoume (France). Prof. Cantera is part of Biology Department of the Universidad del Valle as Full Professor since 1978. He is founding member of the Marine Biology section of this University, where he has been conducting research in marine sciences in mollusk and echinoderm, and in ecology of estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs, and rocky coasts. Currently, he is emeritus Professor and leader of research group Estuaries and Mangroves Ecology (ECOMANGLARES), coordinating around 25 research projects, publishing 89 scientific articles at international and 93 at national journals. He has published 12 complete books and several book chapters nationally and internationally. He has been head of the Department of Biology and Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences and vice-rector for research at the Universidad del Valle. He has directed 12 doctoral theses in Biology or Marine sciences, 15 in master's degree in Biology, and more than 60 degree works in BSc. Biology. Between 2000 and 2004, he was the coordinator of a binational project (Argentina-Uruguay) for the conservation and recovery of the Rio de la Plata estuary.
